One of the main reasons we purchased our camper van was to take it on a week-long road trip on my last week of maternity leave and L’s first week of paternity leave. It’s been too long since we’ve properly traveled and we could not wait to get out and show baby S our passion for travel and camping. Since baby S is still very young, we decided to stay close to minimize long drives. The plan is to drive during his naps and hike when he is awake. This worked out really well and below is our week-long road trip itinerary of the Southern California deserts. Continue reading
Zamp Solar Install
It has been hard to peel away from parenting duties to work on the Sportsmobile. Parts have piled up over the past few weeks, but we are slowly making our way to getting them onto the camper.
After looking through our existing solar set up, we realized we had a cheap generic solar charge controller and a heavy aging panel (about 40 lbs for the panel). While it works, we were looking at upgrading our solar set up to a higher quality set up that will protect our house battery (proper charge profiles, temperature shut off). Our goals were to: 1) add a panel to the roof of the van using our existing square bars, 2) make the set up light enough so the penthouse top would not be difficult to lift, 3) make it easily removable (so we can carry our paddle boards), and 4) make it expandable. Wind Wolves Preserve (with babies)
Last year we posted about Wind Wolves Preserve in Bakersfield, California. We made a trip out there this year with babies in tow. With the good weather and the recent rains, it was the perfect time to bring the babies out camping and hiking.
Our Camper Van (Sportsmobile)
Three years ago, we decided we were going to invest in an camper van. Like most, we started looking exclusively at VW Westfalias and VW Adventurewagens. We stopped after realizing the price of the VWs were climbing and we aren’t fans of the cab over/forward command layout either.
Welcoming 2017
2016 ended with quite a few changes for us. Sam and I welcomed a beautiful baby adventurer to our family. Travelling, backpacking, and hiking proved to be more difficult with an infant child, but we are working on it!
