Gear Review: Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3

Fly Creek

Fly Creek UL2 (left) and Fly Creek UL3 (right) at Catalina Island

We used a two person tent with our dog Dakota for a few trips before we realized that the tent was too small for the three of us.  Dakota would have a hard time finding a place to sleep, so much so that she would usually sleep on my head (don’t ask).  We knew we needed a larger tent and we knew we wanted an ultra-light tent that was not much heavier than our Big Agnes Fly Creek UL2 (FC UL2).  We decided to pick up the Big Agnes Fly Creek UL3 (FC UL3) in place of our FC UL2 for most of our trips.  At 3 lbs 3 oz trail weight, it was about a pound heavier than the FC UL2, but offered more space and was a true free standing tent (unlike the UL2 model).  To date, we have approximately 20 nights  in the tent in varying conditions (summer, winter, spring).

First and foremost, I apologize for the quality of the photos.  I shot most of these on my older cellphone camera.

My sisters and I always do one trip together a year and it has become a tradition to head out to the woods for one weekend together.  This year, we chose to trek the Gene Marshall – Piedra Blanca National Recreation Trail in Los Padres National Forest, Mount. Pinos district.  The trail is a short and easy trail with mixed ecosystems.  It is a great introduction to backpacking for beginners, but also a good weekend get away for seasoned hikers.  We do this trip at least once a year because you can do a short weekend trip or a nice three day thru-hike.

Ciclavia LA 2013

My friend Lisa and I attended the past weekend’s Ciclavia in downtown Los Angeles (DTLA). The day was originally planned to go bridesmaid dress shopping in Korea Town but when we found out it was Ciclavia, we changed our plans to check out this massive biking event.

History of Ciclavia
Ciclavia originated from Bogata, Columbia over 30 years ago to give residences a break from the daily congestion caused by automobiles. It’s now an event that’s celebrated throughout Latin America and United States. During Ciclavia, a predetermined area is closed off from vehicular traffic. Only bikes and pedestrians are allowed to travel on the road.

Rookie Homeowner Mistake- Back Yard Renovation

When Louis and I bought our first house 2 years ago, we knew the yard needed some work. We put off this tedious task for as long as we could and opted to camping and traveling. Can you blame us?

To get ready for our wedding celebration (a year after we officially married), we looked around the backyard and discovered Dakota had killed all of our grass with her pee.
